How to Make Sure Your Knowledge Doesn't Forget to Leave

I'm curious to know as a professor and an author in particular, the systems and strategies you use when learning new things. What are some of the things you do to make sure that that knowledge doesn't get lost? I always carry a notebook with me always and write things on my notebook to take your ways.
