Ireland was such a poor country for so long and the church had educated us to obey and revere. We didn't know how to question our critique because they taught us not to do that. In 2013, the Irish government published a report investigating its own involvement in the Magdalene laundries. They estimate that about a fourth of the women since the laundries were sent by the state. The average age of women who arrived in the laundries was 23; the youngest was nine years old.
