The Difference Between Silicon and Carbon
Silicone is just under carbon on the periodic table, but it has similar bonding. It's considered by chemists to be relatively low toxicity and resistant to heat. You can't use plastics in the oven, but you can use a silicone baking pan for taking things out of the oven. Or we have a silicone popcorn popping bowl that doesn't like melt in the oven or in the microwave.
