The Jesus movement was seen by the broader cultural mainstream at that time as a progressive force in a lot of ways, but also one that was anathema to the dominant structures. When we think of monasteries, we generally tend to think of them in a conservative light, but they could actually be quite progressive and quite radical in their own ways. And certainly people like Tolstoy in Russia, when he was late Tolstoy, is very much seen as the founder of Christian anarchism.
