The Benefits of Benzanthine Penicillin for Primary and Secondary Syphilis

The traditional guideline has been that primary and secondary syphilis can both be treated with benzanthine penicillin at 2.4 million units as a single dose. That's still correct if the patient is not pregnant. When pregnant, published evidence does indicate that additional therapy can be beneficial in order to prevent congenital syphilis. So even for women who have primary or secondary or early latent syphilis, a second dose of benzanthin G at 2. 4 million units can be given one week after the initial dose. Give them that second injection because it helps better protect the baby.
