Matt Welch: If there is one part of the classical doctrine of God that I feel like my hackles get raised with, that I feel sympathetic to arguments against and skeptical of arguments for, it's impassibility. He says Augustine has this great sentence where he says God is without any change in himself as he is making changeable things. Welch: To understand what they mean, you got to know what passions are. They exist whenever a finite creature like you or me is acted upon, affected by or even changed by something external to ourselves,. And now it could move you either towards the good or towards the evil.
