The Role of Truman in the Atomic Bomb Decision
Truman did not know about the Manhattan Project when he inherited the presidency. He was told, I think, by General Marshall, the Army Chief of Staff on that day. The first nuclear test in New Mexico was in the middle of July. From that point on, Truman really had what I would call a minimal role in the decision.
