How to Create a More Personal Conversation on Discord

It seems clear to me that if you're in a small group, the lecture is more valuable in person. For some reason, it just feels more personal to me and like you could ask a question. I wonder if there's a way to recreate that just over Discord. Do you think they come close to the value you get from an in-person discussion?
