The Plebs and Proletarians of Ancient Rome

The plebian assemblies were open to all citizens, but only a relatively small portion of the eligible population could be accommodated. Vote-buying was extremely common in all elections in Rome and candidates who won were almost always supported by wealthy backers. More democratic was the tribal assembly of the people in which each family tribal group voted as a unit. However, it was weighted to favor rural over proletarian voters. So these assemblies afford the plebs, perhaps some say, at least over smaller day-to-day political matters, some means of having their voice heard.
