Harrison Ford plays a man who believes he has to find the real killer in order to exonerate himself. As played by Ford, Rusty is portrayed as weak and broken. We never really wonder if Rusty killed Caroline, because he was so clearly submissive to her,. He's so overcome with emotion looking at photos of her bloody corpse, that he could only have been the culprit if he was a real sociopath.
