We Are What We Pretend to Be
In the land of pretend, 80 % of us are married. And everyone pretends that their marriag is problem free. But at some point in our journey towards enlightenment and rationality, we decided it was wrong to pretend that our outward behaviour should match our inner preferences. If pretending is so bad and we're well rid of it, why did we pretend in the first place? Here we return to the graph. All this pretending in order to coalesce around a mean masked a bunch of unhappiness, shame and guilt. It wasn't something all members of society benefited from.
