The Benefits of Speedrunning in the Speedrun Community

Zack: I love it in your videos when you get to these games that seemingly don't look like they're supposed to be speedrun. Is it more about you subverting what the game is supposed to be or would you actually be okay if the game wore that on its sleeve? Andy: Yeah honestly I think designing it with having no idea for speedrunning in mind oftentimes does benefit the game. People who made these games in the 80s had no idea that people would be running through them as fast as possible decades later. There was an interesting point you made a minute ago about the games being like a playground that ended up being really good for speedrunning.
