Pain and the Sensory Discriminative Aspect of Pain
Some researchers have postulated that maybe this one word pain is actually not the best way to think about it. We don't have enough understanding of how all of these signals from the nurse's perception as well as other sources are being integrated in the brain to generate a painful percept. Pain may not be a unified concept, there may be a bunch of different things going on here. There's no particular reason why we would expect them to all be processed in one single region or processing mechanisms within the brain. This trichotomy could also explain the different experiences in people and different types of pain.
