England and Northern Europe were much more enlightened when it came to women's rights at this point. In England women could inherit from their husbands and keep their dowry even if they married again or if they went to live somewhere else. Whereas in other countries such as Italy a woman would lose her dowry if she went back to her parental home and away from her husband's family. So there were all kinds of ways in which it was really quite OK to be a wealthyish woman in widow particularly in London at this time.
