The Algonquin Words of Roanoke
The word Main Stream is found for the first time in an English document around this same time in 1585. A macaque and a cachaw were two different kinds of squash, and a manatee was a local word for a god or spirit. Most of the Algonquin words that survive today derive from Algonquin tribes further north.
