The Politics of Moral Egoism
The idea that the positive side of the ledger is my own narrow self interest is moral egoism. The moment we allow a self into the picture, then moral egoism is just hiding in the closet. We don't have a self that we have to protect or be afraid of losing. And I think that kind of freedom from is pretty central to a lot of what it's thought. There's no one special to be in the flow state you described. It doesn't make us happy but if we can take enough joy in generating equitable prosperity and happiness for all our fellow-creators - none of that's good.
