The Role of Self Motion in Geometry

Poincare suggests that it is only through motion that we can impose a geometric interpretation on our visual impressions. If we could not move ourselves or our eyes, our sense of sight would be as ungeometrical as our sense of taste or smell. There's no Pythagorean theorem of taste that allows you to calculate the taste distance between wine and beer if you know the distances between beer and water for example.
