The four square breathing technique involves equal amounts of time allocated to the four different parts of breathing. Box breathing has been shown to activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps to counteract the stress response and promote relaxation. One study published found that controlled breathing such as box breathing can improve attention and cognitive performance by modulating brain activity.
