Greek River to the Underworld Lures Travelers
Acheron River is one of five rivers in Greek mythology said to lead to the underworld. The real Acheron springs from the Tomeros mountains and flows west where it fans out to a Delta before emptying into the Ionian sea. Many villages along the way offer access to the river, but Mesopotamus is most closely tied to the rivers mythology. Experts debate whether the site was the fabled temple or ancient farmhouse.
