Hines: The cathedral project gained important support from both prestigious knickerbocker families and the more recently moneyed. Even people who were not members of the church gave money to the fund raising effort because it was also a reason for pride. Construction finally started up with the laying of the corner stone on december 20, seventh, 18 92. But construction would actually begin the next spring, in 18 93. And this area was supported by eight massive, 54 foot tall granite columns that had been floated down here from maine,. each one weighing a hundred and 30 tons.
