Monty's Success in the North African Desert
Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery was seen as Britain's greatest field commander since the Duke of Wellington. His earliest success in the North African desert at El Alamein buoyed the soldiers. Our division was told to capture the range of hills to the north of Tunisia. We captured Hill off the hill but it took time. It took a month of solid fighting. You were attacking probably twice a week. And when you capture one hill, you peer over the top of it and there was another hill in front of you. So he just went on and on for a month. The Germans were shedding on every minute or so. One of the shells came over and I just walked out of my little one
