The History of Decompression Sickness

Robert Hook and Robert Boyle conducted experiments with air pressure in the 1670s, 1680s. They found that at lower pressures, survival was shortened for animals. Hook also devised a decompression chamber to experience the effects of low pressure on himself. He sat in his chamber for about 15 minutes at a pressure of about 570 tor, or the equivalent of 2400 meters, 7,800 feet.
