How Did U.S. Policy Get to Where It Is Today?

There were multiple meetings about whether or not to arm elements of the Free Syrian Army, the rebel armed opposition. The point of the American policy at the time when I was there was not to overthrow Bashar al-Assad. Nobody wanted a repeat of Baghdad in 2003 and I spent five years in Iraq during the war. This is the last thing I wanted was to get into another round of nation building.
