Plato's Symposium on Athens in the Late 380s

Plato wrote the symposium 30 years after it was first written in 380s BC. Athens had been involved in a bitter war with Sparta of greater or less intensity which had been going on for some 15 years at that time. In 416 Athens launched a very large and ultimately completely disastrous expedition to Sicily where Alcibiades took a break from his political career. 12 years after the setting of the symposium Athens was defeated in 404 BC in Sparta lost lost the war Alcibiade also died, five years later Socrates was executed so there's an element of kind of historical nostalgia here.
