The Merkel Boner

A rookie named Fred Merkel of the New York Giants made a notorious base running mistake. He had to go and just casually touch second base for all of the force outs in the bottom of this inning to be resolved. In the hubbub of the celebration, he did not do so. As a result, the game ended in a tie and the Cubs won the pennant instead of the Giants winning the pennant.
