The Origins of the Camels in America

In the 1850s, a couple of companies started importing camels to help American settlers travel westward. When those companies failed, the United States Army picked up on the idea that they could use camels to work their way west. A camel's hump can store about 80 pounds of fat, which a camel can break down into water and energy when sustenance is not available. Camels rarely sweat, despite their hair, even in desert temperatures that reach 120 degrees. And in the winter desert plants may hold enough moisture to allow a camel to go without water for weeks.
