The inquest into the deaths of tom and ileen alderedge began on January 25. Over one week, 800 pages of statements and nearly 60 exhibits were presented to the court. The couple voluntarily discarded their diving equipment after succumbing to delirium as a result of dehydration. Without the buoyancy provided by their gear, the couple would have been unable to tread water for long and would have drowned soon after. It was deemed unlikely that Tom and ileen were attacked by sharks, but rather voluntarily abandoned their diving equipment when they became dehydrated.
