In the zen tradition, a zen teacher may hold up a cup and ask, is this a cup, or is this not a cup? And there's no need for an answer, because the question ends at being more in lightning then the answer. When we buy into the concept, we end up falling into the trap of thinking things are as we think they are. But that's the trap. We're always making things up. Understanding can't help us in this process, because concepts are the problem. We create concepts. So when we start to understand that, that's what we do. We create the labels, we create the meanings, but nothing really is what it is
