The Foundations of Philanthropy

The idea behind philanthropy was to take this medical approach and apply it to social illness. Russell Sage is a less known name than Carnegie and Rockefeller, but he was a New York railroad exec who when he died left his fortune to his wife Margaret. She started the Russell Sage Foundation in 1907 for the improvement of social and living conditions in the United States.
