Jackson took office in 1829 with one big goal in mind Move the native peoples west of the Mississippi by force if necessary to justify taking millions of acres of their ancestral lands. Jackson offered a swap move west he said and will give you land in the Indian territory that comprised most of present-day Oklahoma. But thousands refused and some even waged war to protect their land. Finally in 1838 white troops rounded up resistant Native Americans and held them in deplorable conditions in internment camps In the winter already hungry and sick the tribes were forced to begin moving west Many walked barefoot in the snow for hundreds of miles leading bloody footprints behind them. About 4,000 people especially the elderly and children died
