CHAPTER

The Relationship Between Inflammation and Dysbiosis

Dysbiosis is the word that we use to describe damage to the gut microbiome. It's more than just a change to the microbes, it starts to affect the epithelial layer of cells. And when this occurs, what's leaking from the gut into the body is a specific thing called bacterial endotoxin. Bacterial endotoxin also called lipopolysaccharide actually activates the immune system. The scientists will call it increase intestinal permeability. Other people will call it leaky gut. We're talking about dysbiosis. This is particularly relevant when we discuss COVID-19 and respiratory failure.
