Sally Kohn: I think one of my favorite things to point to is the original surveillance capitalism. It was a monthly review piece that kind of sketches out some of the economic and geopolitical concerns the U.S. had coming out of World War II, right? She says it asked how do you handle productive surplus in an era when productivity has jumped so much; what system can preserve power or hegemony? Kohn: We're trying to get people to consume in specific ways by using advertising as a way to incentivize certain trends.
