A child is living in a world of infinite possibility with a dark cloud of fear around it. The greatest fear a child has is not necessarily being defenseless, but of having to defend themselves against the person who is supposed to defend them. So that's why fear and escape are these crucial motivations for the child protagonist character in the fantasy film. And we see that also in Paton's lab. The protagonist has only really one real way to escape Captain Bidal, this horrible father figure who by the end of the story literally wants to kill her.
