Singing and speaking are different. American accents are conventional in music, which has its roots in the USA. So therefore, when singing pop songs, an American accent is the standard. Singing those songs with an obvious British RP accent like mine or other just ends up being a bit weird, unnatural and wrong sounding. But there are plenty of exceptions to this too. I don't want you thinking that all British people, whenever they open their mouths to sing, suddenly become Americans. There are loads of examples of British people singing in a British accent as well. That includes songs or genres or bands that have something authentically British about them. We'll be looking at some examples later.
