Free Black Soldiers in the North and the West

Free black men are authorized to fight in 18 62. So that's a year into the war. It's not as late as some people think. They're, and this is through the militia act of 18 62, self emancipating men,. Those men who have been enslaved before the war began. They're not authorized to fight until the emancipation proclamation. That happened as soon as they escaped. And we know that upwards of a hundredand 80 thousand men serve in the union army and in the navy during the conflict. You've got those black northerners and westerners who volunteer for service immediately. And lincoln says, no, we don't need you. I can't let
