Five thousand murdered tasmanians is a horrifying historical and human tragedy. But what is it that makes us recoil from a genecide like that so violently? I would suggest it's not just the misery and the killing. Ten thousand murders take place in the united states every year, but it doesn't occur to us as being an in tolerable atrocity twice as horrible as the five thousand murdered tAsmanians. Something more fundamental has been lost. The cultural complex will never exist again. It's gone. Any nation in the world, if they have a nuclear arsenal but are facing a tasmanian extermination, would turn the entire world into a radioactive disaster before it allowed
