Introduction
John Green: F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby is one of the great American novels. He says it took a circuitous route on its way to becoming one of the best-known books in America. In 1924, when first published, reviews weren't great and were considered inferior to his previous work This Side of Paradise. By the time Fitzgerald died in 1940 at the age of 44, Gatsby was mostly forgotten.
