The Importance of Regulating Slavery

In Exodus 21 versus 20 to 21, anyone who beats their male or female slaves with a rod must be punished if the slave dies as a direct result. If but they are not to be punished, if the slave recovers after a day or two, since the slave is their property. And see, that's explicitly say that they're not punished as long as they get up. But even so, the kind of regulations we're talking about are still pretty grotesque. They still have humans owning other human beings as property and allowing them to beat them mercilessly for days on end.
