Shannon's work on information theory grew out of some very technical problems. The Bell system had in sending relatively lossless messages across this giant national and intercontinental network of telephone wires. And the problem that Shannon was brought into was, you know, how can you encode information safely to make sure that you can transmit perfectly from sender to receiver?
