The Outlaw - A History of Outlaws
An outlaw is a person who operates outside the law on an on going basis. Back in the roman era, to be branded an outlaw meant having all your legal rights and protections stripped from you. In doing so, they became something more than mere criminals. They became heroes. Historians and folk lorists have nailed down a simple list of qualities we can find in hero outlaw stories. Their tales almost always involve crimes that benefit the community,. And their endings usually come at the hands of friends or insiders who betray them to the evil authorities.
