The Trouble With Cable Maintenance in Tonga
It took five weeks to get Tonga back online because a repair crew had to construct nearly 60 miles of cable. Cable companies can also bury cables within the seafloor to protect them. The ICPC estimates that the vast majority of incidents are not even natural disasters like Tonga. Over 70% roughly of cable damages or cable cuts come from bottom contact fishing or vessel anchors.
