Introduction

Albert Tropp was a member of the US military during World War II. He deserted from his base in Morocco and was court-martialed. The US claimed the right to declare someone who deserted stateless, to strip them of citizenship. When he tried to apply for a passport after the war, he was denied on the basis that he had been stripped of his citizenship. Then this escalated to the Supreme Court eventually.
