The Importance of a Nun in Atholwald's War
Atholwald, the eldest son and heir to good King Atholred, took a nun as his wife. The Chronicle remains entirely silent on who this nun was. But Simon Keynes has a theory that I think carries a great deal of merit. If Atholwald was looking to bolster his claim to the throne, if he was looking to establish that the kingdom would be safest under his line, then a highborn wife from the right family could help him secure that.
