The Death Penalty in Japan

Yoshikuni believes that what he witnessed in 1971 holds lessons for how the death penalty is carried out in Japan today. Around the world capital punishment is becoming less popular with more than 70% of countries putting a stop to the practice. In December 2021, there was a shift as Japan executed three prisoners by hanging for the first time since 2019. The prisoners had been on death row for several years since being convicted of multiple murders.
