How Did We Evolve to Have Mucus?

Life originated in the water in the oceans. When animals became terrestrial, there was this problem of having to deal with dryness. This is where you have mucus. Mucus plays a great role in the oral cavity. It helps us understand how bacteria can attach to surfaces in the mouth and also more importantly to surfaces on teeth.
