What Happened to the Hiawatha Belt in All These Events?
The hiawatha belt was probably made as part of a treaty ceremony. The one that survives to day in the possession of the onondaga may be the original from that moment, or it might be a very old surviving copy. We know that it is very old because it shows wear and tear from age and use. There are signs of repair, stitching to amend tears, and a combination and juxtaposition of newer and older beads suggesting that broken or worn out beads have been replaced over time.
