Religion in the German War
The causes of the war are also constantly debated, but there are two biggis really. The one hand you might argue that it was the third round in the religious wars. This is a strong strand of historiography, but it has been increasingly poopooed in favour of a much more traditional dynastic conflict. For many ordinary people, they came to join in the wars, to fight for their religion,. In particular, the scots and english who went to join the armies, and indeed the irish. Though even in this, it's important to recognize that many went for the money and opportunities it presented.
