Almost always self criticism rises from a feeling of threat. We're trying to use that fight, flight or freeze response to deal with the threat. Once we realize our inner critic is actually trying to help us shutting it down just makes it worse. It's kind of quite remarkable to realize that our inner critic and our inner compassion itself both want us to be safe.
