The early modern Mediterranean was a time of intense rivalry between the Ottomans and other European powers. Spies were used to expose each other as part of institutional rivalries or similar rivalries, even among interest groups that use their own espionage networks. Information became a commodity for not only central government, but also for trade because it's an age in which we have the printing press developing.
