Is Catastrophism Just a View That's Been Held by Religious People?

Both uniformitarianism and catastrophism have been held both by religious and non religious people. So these shouldn't be seen in us versus them tribal terms. You might get the contrary impression from some young earth supporters, because their view is pretty firmly in the catastrophist camp. And they often criticise uniformitarians. However, you can be a catastrophist even if youare not a young earth supporter, or even religious. In the same way,you can be a uniformitarian, regardless of whether your religious not are irreconcilable viewpoints. The majority position in the scientific community is thus a hybrid of uniformitarianismand catastrophism.
